چکیده

In the framework of turbulence dynamo, flow motions amplify a weak seed magnetic field through the stretching of field lines. Although the amplification process has been a topic of active research, less attention has been paid to the length scales of magnetic field. In this paper, we described a numerical study on characteristic lengths of magnetic field in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. We considered the case of very weak or zero mean magnetic field, which is applicable to the turbulence in the intergalactic space. Our findings are as follows. (1) At saturation, the peak of magnetic field spectrum occurs at ∼ L0/2, where L0 is the energy injection scale, while the most energy containing scale is∼ L0/5. The peak scale of spectrum of projected, two-dimensional field is∼ L0. (2) During the stage of magnetic field amplification, the energy equipartition scale shows a power-law increase of ∼ t, while the integral and curvature scales show a linear increase. The equipartition, integral, and curvature scales saturate at ∼ L0, ∼ 0.3L0, and ∼ 0.15L0, respectively. (3) The coherence length of magnetic field defined in the Faraday rotation measure (RM) due to the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) is related to the integral scale. We presented a formula that expresses the standard deviation of RM, σRM , in terms of the integral scale and rms strength of the IGMF, and estimated that σRM would be ∼ 100 and ∼ a few rad m for clusters and filaments, respectively. Inverse cascade in decaying three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence.

We perform direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional freely decaying magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. For helical magnetic fields, an inverse cascade effect is observed in which power is transferred from smaller scales to larger scales. The magnetic field reaches a scaling regime with self-similar evolution, and power-law behavior at high wave numbers. We also find power-law decay in the...

Effects of variations in magnetic Reynolds number on magnetic field distribution in electrically conducting fluid under magnetohydrodynamic natural convection

In this study the effect of magnetic Reynolds number variation on magnetic distribution of natural convection heat transfer in an enclosure is numerically investigated. The geometry is a two dimensional enclosure which the left wall is hot, the right wall is cold and the top and bottom walls are adiabatic. Fluid is molten sodium with Pr=0.01 and natural convection heat transfer for Rayleigh num...

Lack of universality in decaying magnetohydrodynamic turbulence.

Using computations of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with a Taylor-Green flow, whose inherent time-independent symmetries are implemented numerically, and in the absence of either a forcing function or an imposed uniform magnetic field, we show that three different inertial ranges for the energy spectrum may emerge for three different initial magnetic fields, the selecti...

MHD inverse cascade in the early Universe

We have carried out numerical simulations of freely decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in three dimensions, which can be applied to the evolution of stochastic magnetic fields in the early Universe. For helical magnetic fields an inverse cascade effect is observed in which magnetic helicity and energy is transfered from smaller scales to larger scales, accompanied by power law growth...

Divergence of neighboring magnetic-field lines and fast-particle diffusion in strong magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, with application to thermal conduction in galaxy clusters.

Using direct numerical simulations, we calculate the rate of divergence of neighboring magnetic-field lines in different types of strong magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. In the static-magnetic-field approximation, our results imply that tangled magnetic fields in galaxy clusters reduce the electron diffusion coefficient and thermal conductivity by a factor of approximately 5-10, relative to thei...
